LaLiga: Alonso explains decision to bench Vinícius against Elche

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has defended his decision to start Vinícius Júnior on the bench in the 2-2 draw against Elche, insisting the forward understood the tactical call.

Madrid delivered another inconsistent performance in Alicante, settling for a point after a sluggish display that extended their recent poor run.

Vinícius, usually an automatic starter, was omitted from the initial XI and only introduced in the second half as Los Blancos searched for a breakthrough.

Rodrygo preferred despite poor form

Alonso instead opted to pair Kylian Mbappé with Rodrygo, a decision that raised eyebrows given Rodrygo’s ongoing goal drought.

The gamble produced little improvement, further fueling criticism of the manager’s selection choices.

Alonso: “He understood his role today”

Speaking after the match, Alonso addressed the decision directly, downplaying any potential tension with his star winger.

“Viní on the bench? I spoke to him, and he understood his role today. He’s invested in the team,” Alonso said.

The coach framed the move as a tactical adjustment rather than a disciplinary measure, adding that squad rotation will remain necessary as Madrid goes through a demanding schedule.

With the club’s form wobbling and fan frustration growing, Alonso’s selection decisions, especially involving key players like Vinícius, will continue to face heightened criticism in the coming weeks.
