Akor Adams played a crucial role as Sevilla boosted their La Liga survival hopes with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Atlético Madrid on Saturday.

The Nigerian striker opened the scoring for the hosts withing 10 minutes to ensure a result that ended Sevilla’s three-match losing streak, moving them three points clear of the relegation zone.

Adams delivers early impact

Sevilla started well and with a sense of urgency. Their early efforts were rewarded in the when Adams calmly converted a penalty after Isaac Romero was fouled inside the box.

Atlético responded in the 35th minute through debutant Javier Boñar, whose header restored parity after sustained pressure from the visitors.

But Sevilla regained control just before halftime when Nemanja Gudelj headed home from a Rubén Vargas cross in stoppage time.

Atletico, who rotated their squad heavily ahead of a UEFA Champions League clash with FC Barcelona, dominated the second half but failed to find breakthrough.

Despite registering 25 shots, the visitors could not find a second goal, as Sevilla’s defense held tight for all three points.

The win lifts Sevilla to 34 points in 15th place, providing breathing space in the relegation battle. Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid remain fourth on 57 points, with attention now turning back to their European commitments.
