Lagos govt shuts Eko bridge indefinitely over safety concerns

The Lagos State Government has announced the indefinite closure of the Eko Bridge outbound to Lagos Island for safety investigations and repair works.
According to the state government, the closure will take effect from Tuesday, May 12, 2026, as authorities begin investigations and rehabilitation work on the bridge.
The announcement was made on Sunday by Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, who advised motorists to make use of alternative routes during the closure period.
“Adequate traffic and security personnel will be deployed along alternative routes to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow,” he assured.
Motorists travelling through Apongbon and Ijora Olopa have been urged to use the Third Mainland Bridge to access their destinations and avoid delays caused by the closure.
Despite the shutdown of the outbound carriageway, the commissioner clarified that the inward Lagos Island section of the bridge will remain open to motorists.
Authorities say traffic officials and security personnel will be stationed around affected areas to help manage movement and reduce traffic disruption during the repair period.
