Lady narrates writing JAMB 5 times after missing admission over high fees
A Nigerian lady has recounted her bitter experience of writing JAMB five times before finally gaining university admission, after being initially denied due to the high financial demand from her chosen institution.
She also revealed how her classmates, many of whom she had taught mathematics, graduated long before she could even enroll.
This was shared in a post on the popular social media platform TikTok.
Identifying herself as Rosemary, she opened up about the tough experiences she faced growing up, especially after losing her father.
She explained that life had been rough for her, recalling how she had to drop out of school to care for her ailing father, while also preparing for JAMB from home.
In her words: “I’m Rosemary. When I wrote my first JAMB, during that period, father was not feeling fine. He was sick for some years and I had to quit school, stay at home, read for JAMB. It wasn’t really enticing because all my classmates were in school, but I just had to do it. But after taking the exam, I passed, but I couldn’t get admission.”
She explained that although she passed the exam, her family could not afford the money the university requested, as most of their funds were being spent on her father’s medical treatment.
“The Nigerian university was asking for a certain amount of money and my father wasn’t feeling fine. The family money went into his treatment and all that. I took JAMB for five years before I went to school,” she said.
She spoke emotionally about how painful it was to see those she helped academically move ahead of her.
“It wasn’t really good because I was very good in my class. In fact, most of my classmates, I taught them mathematics and they graduated in the university before I even enrolled in one. So it was even very bad for me. I felt bad,” she said.
Rosemary noted that the situation affected her socially, as she eventually started withdrawing from others. “At a time, I had to isolate myself from my classmates. I thank God today, I’m a graduate,” she added.
She went on to share more details about her late father, explaining how he battled illness for eight years.
“He was sick for eight years and after much treatment, he was recovering, getting back. One day he went out and came back, he was okay, he was eating. He was advising my siblings and kept asking I should come and see him,” she said.
Speaking fondly of him, Rosemary revealed: “My father can speak every language in Nigeria. He knows the history of each of the states, the villages, because he travels a lot. Whenever he’s around, he used to tell us about each state.”
Her story has since drawn emotional reactions from viewers, with many taking to the comment section to share their thoughts and words of encouragement.
