La Liga: Simeone hails Lookman after historic derby performance

Diego Simeone has praised Ademola Lookman following his standout performance in Atletico Madrid’s 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid.

Lookman opened the scoring in the Madrid derby, becoming the first Nigerian to score in the fixture, and delivered an influential first-half performance despite the eventual result at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Simeone praises growth and impact

Simeone noted the forward’s rapid development and importance to the team after the match.

“Lookman is growing, working very well, giving us different things in attack, and we need him that way,” he said.

“We’re also helping him grow defensively so he can contribute that too, which he’s capable of. He’s a kid with a huge heart and an incredible willingness to learn and improve. That’s fantastic.”

The Argentine coach added: “Hopefully, he’ll continue to give us important things.”

Landmark goal and strong showing

Lookman’s goal came in the 33rd minute, finishing a quick move initiated by Giuliano Simeone, whose backheel set up the chance.

The Nigeria international played 57 minutes, completed 17 passes with notable accuracy, and remained a consistent attacking threat during his time on the pitch.

However, Atletico were unable to maintain their advantage, as Vinicius Junior inspired Real Madrid’s comeback in the second half.

Lookman was substituted alongside Antoine Griezmann as Simeone sought tactical adjustments, but the visitors could not regain control.

Despite the defeat, Lookman’s performance stood out as a major positive, marking his rapid adaptation since joining Atletico in the January transfer window.
