Kidnappers who abducted Edo doctor, demanded ₦100m, nabbed at his hospital after showing up for treatment

Two men suspected to have kidnapped a medical doctor and his brother in Edo State have been arrested in a dramatic turn of events at the Edo State University Teaching Hospital, Auchi.

The suspects were identified as Idris Abubakar and Sani Abubakar, according to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem.

How the Doctor Recognised His Alleged Abductors

The arrest happened early Sunday when the doctor, Abu Ibrahim, reportedly recognised the suspects at the hospital where he works.

The men had come to the facility to check on a sick baby girl who was receiving treatment in the emergency ward. While carrying out his duties, Ibrahim identified them as part of the gang that once abducted him and his brother.

He immediately alerted security operatives, leading to their arrest at the hospital.

What Happened During the January Kidnapping

The doctor and his brother, Abu Tahir, were abducted in January at Igbira Camp in Auchi, close to a military barracks.

The kidnappers reportedly demanded ₦100 million as ransom. During the ordeal, the younger brother was allegedly k!lled after attempting to escape. The doctor was later released after millions of naira were paid.

Suspects Recently Seen With Men in Military Uniforms

Sources revealed that before their arrest, the suspects had been sighted moving around Auchi town with two individuals wearing military uniforms.

This raised concerns within the community and added to fears over the growing cases of kidnapping in Auchi and parts of Edo North.

Community Leaders React to Arrests

Community leaders, including Alhaji Rilwanu Bonvist Oshiobugie and the Daudu of Igbe, Chief Yekini Sado, described the arrest as a major breakthrough.

They called for a full investigation to expose other members of the kidnapping network operating in the area.

Governor, Police Commended for Efforts

The leaders praised Governor Monday Okpebholo, noting that his security interventions are beginning to produce positive results.

Following the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, ordered that the suspects be transferred to the State Police Command Headquarters for further investigation.
