Controversy

Several important events and allegations have fuelled the controversy surrounding Kayode Egbetokun’s appointment as Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police (IGP). Omoyele Sowore said that Egbetokun was removed from office and replaced by a senior officer from the FCID in Lagos.

However, neither the Presidency nor the Nigerian Police Force issued an official confirmation. Sowore was charged with 17 counts of cybercrime for referring to Egbetokun as an “illegal IGP,” which the police believe could instigate public disorder. The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, has ordered Sowore and Sahara Reporters to stop posting defamatory materials about Egbetokun and his family.

The modification to the Police Act allows Egbetokun to serve a full four-year term notwithstanding his retirement age. This has prompted controversy and dissent in the police force. According to reports, President Bola Tinubu removed Egbetokun from office and selected Tunji Disu as his successor.

The topic has sparked widespread public debate and legal action, raising concerns about accountability, honesty, and the ramifications of the Police Act modification.
