Johnny Depp (born June 9, 1963) is an American actor and musician most recognized for his diverse and unusual film selections. As Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, he achieved what may have been his greatest achievement.

Depp was the youngest of four children born to civil engineer John Christopher Depp and waitress Betty Sue Depp in Owensboro, Kentucky, on June 9, 1963.  Throughout his childhood, Depp’s family moved around a lot before settling in Miramar, Florida, in 1970.  When Johnny was fifteen years old, his parents divorced in 1978, and his mother subsequently wed Robert Palmer, whom Depp has called “an inspiration”.

When Depp was twelve, his mother bought him a guitar, and he began performing in several bands.  He left Miramar High School in 1979 at the age of sixteen in order to pursue a career in rock music.  Two weeks later, he tried to go back to school, but the headmaster encouraged him to follow his dream of becoming a musician instead.  In 1980, Depp became a member of the group The Kids.

The band changed their name to Six Gun Method and moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of a record deal after seeing some local success in Florida.  Apart from the band, Depp worked at odd jobs like telemarketing. In December 1983, Depp wed Lori Anne Allison, a makeup artist and the sister of the vocalist and bassist in his band.

In 1984, Depp started working with the band Rock City Angels after the Kids broke up before landing a record deal.  He co-wrote “Mary” for their first album, Young Man’s Blues, released by Geffen Records.  In 1985, Depp and Allison separated.

Career

Depp released “Benny & Joon” and “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” in 1993 after the success of “Edward Scissorhands,” both of which were regarded as sleeper hits.  The movie ‘Arizona Dream,’ which came out the same year, showcased his range as an actor.

The gifted actor showed that he cares more about the roles he plays than box office success when he teamed up with Burton to play the lead in ‘Ed Wood,’ a 1994 tribute to the infamously bad director.

His roles in the 1995 films “Don Juan DeMarco,” in which he portrayed an eccentric man who thought he was the best lover, “Dead Man,” a black-and-white western, and “Nick of Time,” a dark drama about an accountant who has to kill a politician to save his kidnapped daughter, showcased his versatility.

When Depp played opposite Al Pacino in “Donnie Brasco” in 1997, the exaggerated story of an FBI agent breaking into the mafia became his second movie role.

He played Ichabod Crane in “Sleepy Hollow,” co-wrote the thriller “The Ninth Gate” with Roman Polanski, and co-starred with Charlize Theron in the sci-fi thriller “The Astronaut’s Wife” to close out the 20th century.

With roles in the 2000 romantic dramas “Chocolat” and “Before Night Falls,” both of which were based on the life of Cuban poet and playwright Reinaldo Arenas, Depp continued to showcase his range as an actor as the new century started.

He was featured in “Blow,” “The Man Who Cried,” and “From Hell,” which is based on the notorious “Jack the Ripper” killings, the following year.

‘Once Upon a Time in Mexico,’ the last movie in Robert Rodriguez’s trilogy about Mexico, featured him in 2003.  ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ was his first film in which he played Captain Jack Sparrow.

In 2005, he portrayed Willy Wonka in a darker adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic story, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.  He portrayed Victor Van Dort in Tim Burton’s ‘Corpse Bride’ that same year.

He played Captain Jack Sparrow again in the 2006 and 2007 films “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.”

‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,’ another Burton picture, had him as the title character, a darker performance that concluded in 2007. He portrayed famous felon John Dillinger in the 2009 movie “Public Enemies.”  Then came ‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,’ where Depp was one of a select few actors selected to play Heath Ledger’s role when the actor passed away during production.

As Captain Sparrow, he returned in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ in 2011.  Then, in “The Rum Diary” and “Jack and Jill,” he made an uncredited appearance as himself. He appeared uncredited in the 2012 film adaptation of his popular TV program ’21 Jump Street,’ portraying an agent. He collaborated with Burton again to play Barnabas Collins in the big-screen adaptation of ‘Dark Shadows’ the same year.

The next year, he played Tonto in ‘The Lone Ranger’ alongside Armie Hammer. In 2013, he also appeared in ‘Lucky Them’ before taking on the role of Dr. Will Caster in the science fiction film ‘Transcendence’.

After appearing in ‘Transcendence,’ the gifted actor was credited as Guy Lapointe when he featured in ‘Tusk’ in 2014, before starring as the wolf in ‘Into the Woods’ later that year.

Depp played an eccentric art dealer in ‘Mortdecai,’ which featured Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor. His future roles in 2015 and beyond include ‘Black Mass,’ ‘London Fields, ‘ and ‘Yoga Hosers.’
