Jennifer Shrader Lawrence was born August 15, 1990, in Louisville, Kentucky.[3] Her father, Gary, owns a construction company, and her mother, Karen (née Koch), is a summer camp manager. She has two older brothers named Ben and Blaine.

In 2005, when she was 14, she travelled to New York City with her mother to explore talent agencies in the hopes of breaking into the acting and modelling industries. While there, she was spotted by a talent scout and auditioned for his agency.

She spent the summer of that year in New York, where she had tiny acting jobs and modelled for advertising. Based on Lawrence’s success, the family relocated to Los Angeles when she graduated from high school early to pursue her career.

Career

Lawrence starred in the cable television comedy The Bill Engvall Show from 2007 to 2009 as the teenage daughter of a psychologist. She soon moved on to the lead role in the film Winter’s Bone (2010), which proved to be her big break.

Lawrence received her first Academy Award nomination for best actress when she was 20 years old for her depiction of Ree, an impoverished rural adolescent searching for her absent criminal father in the Ozark Mountains.

Lawrence rose to prominence as the shape-shifting mutant Mystique in the 2011 film X-Men: First Class, which she reprised in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), and Dark Phoenix (2019).

She rose to prominence after being cast as heroine Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games (2012), the cinematic adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling young-adult novel series.

Lawrence’s character Katniss was akin to Ree, another brave girl who used outdoor survival abilities to stay alive in harsh circumstances.

She resumed the role of Katniss in the Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), Mockingjay Part 1 (2014), and Mockingjay Part 2 (2015).

Lawrence also appeared in the 2012 picture Silver Linings Playbook, directed by David O. Russell. In that film, she played Tiffany Maxwell, a young widow who meets a guy suffering from mental illness (played by Bradley Cooper).

She received critical acclaim for the hit film and became the second youngest woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress (2013).

Lawrence later played the wife of a con artist (Christian Bale) in Russell’s cat-and-mouse comedy American Hustle (2013), which won her an Oscar nod for best supporting actress.

Lawrence received her fourth Oscar nomination for her role in Russell’s Joy, in which she played a beleaguered single mother whose business abilities push her to fortune and success.

She narrated A Beautiful Planet (2016), a documentary that includes images of Earth obtained from the International Space Station.

Lawrence appeared in 2017’s psychological thriller Mother! as the second wife of a famous poet, whose quiet life in a remote mansion is upended by the presence of visitors.

She then portrayed a former dancer who becomes a Russian spy in the thriller Red Sparrow (2018).

Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio star in the dark comedy Don’t Look Up (2021), in which they play astronomers attempting to warn humanity of an impending comet strike that will destroy Earth.

During this period, Lawrence began to pursue more personal projects. This led to her starring role in Causeway (2022), a quiet drama about an Afghanistan War veteran who comes home after sustaining brain damage.

Lawrence joined the cast of No Hard Feelings in 2023. She performed the character of a woman hired by the parents of a reclusive young man to assist him in overcoming his social awkwardness before starting college.

Lynne Ramsay directed Die My Love (2025), in which she co-starred with Robert Pattinson as a young mother dealing with the ups and downs of early parenting.
