Jannik Sinner biography: Early Life, Career, Stats, Titles, Girlfriend & Net Worth

Jannik Sinner (born on August 16, 2001) is a professional tennis player. The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) has ranked him as the top player in the world for men’s singles, including a year-end No. 1 ranking in 2024.

Sinner has won 24 singles titles on the ATP Tour, including four Grand Slams: two at the Australian Open, one at Wimbledon, and one at the US Open. In addition, he guided Italy to the 2023 and 2024 Davis Cup titles and won the ATP Finals in 2024 and 2025.

Sinner won his first major victory at the 2024 Australian Open after defeating world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and then Daniil Medvedev in a five-set final.

He then won three Masters 1000 titles, the US Open, and the ATP Finals to complete the year as the world’s number one player, being the first Italian to achieve this feat.

Sinner defended his Australian Open title in 2025 and, after serving a three-month suspension for the unintentional administration of clostebol, placed second at the French Open, losing an epic final against his career adversary Carlos Alcaraz.

He returned by defeating Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final and becoming the first Italian to win the trophy. He finished the 2025 season by winning the ATP Finals and defeating Alcaraz in straight sets.

Jannik Sinner was born in San Candido, Italy, on August 16, 2001. Jannik Sinner’s parents are Johann and Siglinde Sinner. He grew up in Sexten and started playing tennis at age seven. Jannik Sinner’s father, Johann Sinner, is a skilled chef with more than 40 years of expertise.

Siglinde Sinner is Jannik Sinner’s mother. His mother, Siglinde, worked as a waiter at the same restaurant where his father was the cook in Val Pusteria, Italy. Sinner gave up tennis as a child to pursue a skiing career.

He was one of Italy’s best skiers and a champion between the ages of eight and twelve. He also preferred football (soccer) to tennis, but picked the latter at the age of 13.

Career

Sinner, unlike many players who later rose to the top of the tennis world, chose not to compete in any Grand Slam junior tournaments during his junior career, instead opting for lower-tier competitions.

So he was somewhat unknown when he debuted on the ATP Tour in 2018. Nonetheless, he rapidly demonstrated his promise, winning three events in his second year as a professional and concluding 2019 ranked within the top 100.

The next year, he reached the quarterfinals of the French Open, losing to Rafael Nadal in three sets, his finest major event performance to date. Sinner won four ATP championships in 2021 and reached the round of 16 at both the French Open and the US Open.

He also made headlines by reaching the final of the Miami Open at the age of 19, becoming the youngest finalist in a Masters 1000 tournament (a competition ranked second only to the ATP Finals and four Grand Slams in terms of status) since Nadal in 2005.

Sinner changed his coaching and conditioning staff in 2022, claiming the need to diversify his ground stroke-based game and beef up his lanky frame. That makeover paid off, as he advanced to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon and the United States Open.

In both situations, he lost hard-fought five-set sets against eventual tournament winners Djokovic and Alcaraz. Sinner had a successful 2023 season, winning four tournaments and reaching the Wimbledon semifinals. However, he appeared to reach a new level in the last months of the year.

Sinner defeated Djokovic for the first time at the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy, in November, having lost their previous three meetings. Later that month, Sinner defeated Djokovic once more, helping Italy win the Davis Cup since 1976.

Sinner extended his momentum into 2024, reaching his first major final at the Australian Open in January. He lost the first two sets versus Daniil Medvedev, then rallied to win 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. With his victory, he became the third Italian to win a major. Sinner was named the top-ranked men’s player on June 10 after winning the Miami Open in March and finishing strongly in several other tournaments.

He was scheduled to compete for Italy in both singles and doubles in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, but withdrew due to sickness.

In August, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), professional tennis’s approved anti-doping organisation, stated that Sinner’s blood tests from March 2024 tested positive for clostebol, a prohibited anabolic steroid. Sinner claimed that he had been accidentally exposed to the chemical by a member of his fitness staff, which the ITIA acknowledged, and Sinner was exonerated of all charges.

The investigation’s delayed release and the ITIA’s verdict generated outrage in the tennis world, with numerous players claiming Sinner was treated unfairly due to his status as a rising star in the sport. Sinner maintained that it was an unintentional error and fired two of his employees.

Sinner’s first competition following the revelation of his positive blood test was the United States Open. Despite continuing to be questioned by reporters about the doping case, his on-court performance was consistent, and he lost only two sets during the event on his way to winning his second major of the year.

He was only the third male tennis player since 1968 to win his first two major titles in the same year. Several weeks after the tournament, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) stated that it had launched an appeal against the ITIA’s decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sport, seeking a one- to two-year suspension for Sinner.
