Thomas Jacob Black was born in Santa Monica, California, on August 28, 1969, as the son of satellite engineers Thomas William Black and Judith Love Cohen. He was reared in Hermosa Beach, California.

His mother worked on the Minuteman nuclear missile guidance system, the Apollo lunar module guiding system, and the Hubble Space Telescope research ground station, as well as being a writer. He has three older half-siblings from his mother: scientist Neil Siegel, Howard Siegel, and Rachel Siegel.

His mother was born Jewish into a family from Poland and Russia. His father converted to Judaism and is of German, English, Irish, and Scottish ancestry. Black grew up Jewish, attended Hebrew school, and had a bar mitzvah.

Black’s parents put him in the Poseidon School, a private secondary school for pupils who struggled in standard schools. He also attended Crossroads School, where he excelled at drama. He later attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), but dropped out in his sophomore year to pursue a career in entertainment.

Tim Robbins, a UCLA student, was later cast as Black in Bob Roberts. In 1995 and 1996, he had recurring parts in the HBO sketch comedy series Mr. Show.

Career

In 1987, he joined the Actors’ Gang, a performing ensemble formed by actor-director Tim Robbins, where he met Kyle Gass and John Cusack, with whom he eventually collaborated.

Black went on to appear in several minor film and television projects, including a role in Robbins’ 1992 political satire film Bob Roberts, as well as recurring roles in the sketch comedy series Mr. Show with Bob and David (1995-96).

His breakthrough performance occurred in 2000, when he played the lively, arrogant record store worker Barry Judd in the romantic comedy-drama High Fidelity, with John Cusack as the store’s owner Rob Gordon.

In a climactic concert scenario, Black demonstrates his vocal range by performing a powerful rendition of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On.”

Following his role in High Fidelity, Black catapulted to fame with the 2003 film School of Rock, which was written for him by actor and screenwriter Mike White, Black’s neighbour at the time. Black plays slacker Dewey Finn, who, after being fired from his rock band and being unemployed, impersonates his roommate Ned Schneebly (White) and works as a substitute teacher.

Finn quickly finds himself organising his unsuspecting students into a rock band to compete in a battle-of-the-bands event.

The picture was both critically and commercially successful, grossing $131.1 million on a $35 million budget. In the 2018 feature story “15 Years Later: The Oral History of School of Rock,” released by Paramount Pictures, White recalled, “I had the idea of [Black] leading a band of little kids—it just seemed like a funny visual.”

“Then I got the idea that it would be fun to have him be more of a W.C. Fields character, like a guy who isn’t really somebody you’d want around kids, but that’s part of the fun.”

Black continues to secure major film roles, including a lead role alongside Ben Stiller in the dark comedy Envy (2004). He played pompous film director Carl Dehnam in Peter Jackson’s 2005 adaptation of 1933’s King Kong. In 2006, he worked with White again, this time on the wrestling comedy film Nacho Libre.

White co-wrote the screenplay, and Black played a cook at a monastic orphanage who covertly becomes a luchador (Mexican professional wrestler) to generate funds for the orphanage and win the heart of a lovely nun.

Black also appeared in films that combined his talent for comedy with drama and romance. In the 2006 romantic comedy film The Holiday, he costarred with Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, and Jude Law. The following year, he played alongside Jennifer Jason Leigh in director Noah Baumbach’s comedy-drama Margot at the Wedding (2007).

In the 2008 action-comedy Tropic Thunder, Black co-starred with Stiller and Robert Downey, Jr. as lowbrow comedian-actor Jeff Portnoy. That same year, Black voiced the panda Po in the animated comedy picture Kung Fu Panda, which he reprised in Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011), Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016), and Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024).

He also provided voice acting for the movie Ice Age (2002), Shark Tale (2004), Goosebumps (2015), and The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023).

In 2017, he played Professor Shelly Oberon in the fantasy adventure movie Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. In 2024, Black appeared as a naughty Satan in the Christmas film. Dear Santa. The following year, he starred opposite Jason Momoa in A Minecraft Movie, a film based on the popular open-world electronic game. He followed that up with the action-comedy Anaconda (2025), co-starring Paul Rudd.
