‘It’s been God’ – Amusan after World Championships silver medal

Tobi Amusan says her silver medal at the 2025 World Athletics Championships was the product of resilience and divine providence.

The Nigerian sprint hurdler clocked 12.28s to finish second in the women’s 100m hurdles final, narrowly behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who claimed gold in 12.24s.

Redemption after Olympic setback

Amusan’s podium finish comes just a year after the disappointment of the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she fell short of expectations.

The 28-year-old has now secured her place among Nigeria’s most decorated athletes, becoming only the second Nigerian to win multiple medals at the World Championships after Blessing Okagbare and Ese Brume.

‘It’s been God’

Speaking after the race, Amusan attributed her success to faith in God and the people around her.

“It’s been God, the journey has been extremely rough,” Amusan told Making of Champions. “I’ve taken more L’s than wins and I’m just thankful that I have a great support system: my coach, my family, my mentors, my loved ones, my fans.”

A difficult but historic journey

The world record holder acknowledged that her path has been filled with challenges but described the silver medal as a symbol of perseverance.

Amusan’s return to the podium sealed her reputation as one of Nigeria’s greatest athletes and a consistent force on the global stage.
