‘It’s amazing scoring for your country’ – Ajayi reacts after MOTM display

Semi Ajayi described his opening goal against Tanzania as a defining moment, after the defender was named Man of the Match in Nigeria’s 2-1 win in their AFCON 2025 opener.

The centre-back broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, rising highest to convert from a set piece and put the Super Eagles in control.

The goal set the platform for Nigeria’s victory and underlined Ajayi’s influence at both ends of the pitch.

Goal rewards strong start

Reflecting on the moment, Ajayi stressed the significance of contributing on the scoresheet at international level.

“It’s always an amazing feeling to score for your country, and in a game like this, to get off to a really good start,” he said. “I was really, really pleased.”

His intervention came at a critical phase of the match, giving Nigeria momentum after sustained pressure and validating their aggressive approach in the first half.

Shared responsibility for goals

Ajayi also framed the goal as evidence of Nigeria’s collective attacking threat, not one limited to the forwards.

“It shows one team can’t only rely on attackers to get goals,” he explained. “We get goals from all over the team, defenders, midfielders, everyone needs to chip in if we want to do well in the tournament.”

That mindset, he suggested, is central to Nigeria’s ambitions as the competition progresses.

Focus shifts to improvement

Despite the positive start, Ajayi acknowledged areas that require refinement, particularly after Tanzania briefly reduced the deficit and applied pressure.

“There are a few things we would iron out and improve, but there are also a lot of positives to take,” he said. “We know we need to do better in terms of seeing out the game and killing teams off.”
