‘It’s a pity’ – Arteta defends Gyokeres despite Arsenal striker’s struggles

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has backed Viktor Gyokeres after the Swedish striker failed to find the net in Sunday’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United.
The 26-year-old, who joined from Sporting CP in the summer, has scored just three goals in eight appearances across all competitions.
With Kai Havertz sidelined through injury since August, Gyokeres has been thrust into a regular starting role but has yet to establish consistency in front of goal.

Arteta praises striker’s attitude
Despite his drought, Arteta insisted Gyokeres’ overall contribution remains valuable. The Spaniard highlighted his striker’s involvement in key attacking phases and commended his composure after a penalty appeal was overturned by VAR in the first half.
“I loved his reaction,” Arteta said. “He went on board, never showed frustration and stayed involved in dangerous moments. It’s a pity he didn’t score because in my opinion he fully deserved it.”
More than just goals
Arteta stressed that Gyokeres’ impact extends beyond finishing, pointing to his pressing, hold-up play and aerial battles as vital to Arsenal’s system.
“He’s a really confident boy, his work ethic is incredible, and the demands he puts on himself every day are very high,” Arteta said. “It’s a joy to work with him, and his ceiling is very, very high.”
Focus turns to Europe
Arsenal remain second in the Premier League table, keeping pace with leaders Liverpool. Their attention now shifts to Europe, where they face Olympiacos in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Arteta will be hoping Gyokeres can translate his hard work into goals on the continental stage.
