“It wasn’t just a snake bite…”- Aproko Doctor weighs in on singer Ifunanya’s tragic death

Popular Nigerian doctor and health influencer, Chinonso Egemba, widely known as Aproko Doctor, has reacted to the tragic passing of fast-rising singer Ifunanya.

Earlier reports claimed that the singer died in the early hours of today after being bitten by a snake.

Reacting to the incident, Aproko Doctor explained that snake bites occur across the world, yet victims often survive when they receive proper and timely medical treatment.

According to him, Nanyah reportedly visited two hospitals, but both facilities allegedly turned her away, stating that they did not have antivenom.

“In a country where snakes live, it is unacceptable for hospitals to tell patients they cannot be saved because basic medicines are unavailable, and this is not the 1980s,” he said.

The doctor further revealed that Nigeria has an antivenom developed specifically for local snakes, known as EchiTab, yet it was reportedly unavailable in the hospitals Nanyah visited.

Aproko Doctor criticised the government for prioritising flyovers and ultra-modern hospitals while primary healthcare centres, which should serve as the first point of emergency care, remain poorly equipped.

“We have completely forgotten the basics of healthcare, and it is costing young lives like Nanyah every single day,” he stated.

He also condemned online narratives blaming spiritual snakes or mystical causes, stressing that such explanations distract from the real issues.

He urged citizens to ask critical questions about why hospitals lack antivenom, why ambulances are scarce, and why primary healthcare centres continue to be neglected.

The tragic passing of Nanyah has once again raised serious concerns among Nigerians about the state of emergency healthcare and how preventable deaths continue to occur due to systemic neglect.
