“It was then my aunt realised a 58-year-old woman duped her” – Lady recounts reunion that ended in ₦1m loss

A lady has shared how her aunt lost ₦1 million after reconnecting with a former classmate during a school reunion, despite receiving an earlier warning about lending money to people from the gathering.
According to the narrator, it was her aunt’s first time attending the reunion in many years.
She said the former classmates were excited to see her, while one old friend privately advised her not to lend money to anyone who approached her because some people had a habit of borrowing without repayment.
The lady explained that her aunt maintained contact with the woman after the reunion, and they spoke regularly on the phone.
About a month later, the woman requested a ₦2 million loan to restock her shop, promising to repay it within a week after securing another loan. Her aunt eventually transferred ₦1 million.
Friend disappeared after collecting the money
Recounting the incident, the lady said, “A very old friend approached her and told her that in case any of them asked her of money, she shouldn’t give them that it is a common habit amongst them and that they won’t pay back.”
She further stated, “My aunt borrowed her 1m. All of a sudden, the woman stopped calling and stopped answering my aunt’s calls. Weeks went by, and she did not refund the money… It was then my aunt’s realised a 58-year-old woman duped her.”
Discovery raises more questions
The narrator said her aunt later contacted another male classmate to seek advice. According to him, he had experienced a similar situation with the same woman after lending her money on two occasions, with communication ending after the second loan.
The account has since generated reactions online, with many social media users urging people to exercise caution when lending money, even to longtime acquaintances or friends reunited after many years.
