Israel considers criminalising evangelism: proposed bill could Jail christians who preach Jesus

Israel may soon criminalise sharing the Gospel of Jesus following a bill introduced by two members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition.

United Torah Judaism Knesset members Moshe Gafni and Yaakov Asher proposed legislation that would make it illegal to evangelise through conversation, print, online content, or mail.

The bill outlines punishments including one year in prison for adults and up to two years for sharing with minors under 18.

Concerns over religious freedom

Critics argue the bill threatens freedom of speech and religious expression in Israel, which has a small but longstanding Christian community.

Joel Rosenberg, editor-in-chief of All Israel News and a Jewish follower of Jesus, said, “It is terrible that anyone could be punished simply for explaining their faith to another person. This is not freedom.”

Evangelical leaders worldwide have voiced alarm, warning the legislation could strain Israel’s relations with millions of believers in the United States and beyond.

Political dynamics at play

Gafni previously introduced a similar ban in 1999, but it did not progress. Analysts say the party’s strengthened position in Netanyahu’s coalition makes the current proposal more likely to advance.

Supporters argue it is intended to protect citizens from unwanted proselytisation, while opponents see it as a direct restriction on personal liberties and religious expression.

The bill has sparked debates both inside Israel and internationally as lawmakers and religious leaders consider its potential impact.
