INEC resumes nationwide voters registration, launches second phase

The Independent National Electoral Commission has resumed the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration exercise, marking the commencement of the second phase of voter enrolment across the country.
Second phase of voter registration begins nationwide
The exercise resumed on Monday following a brief suspension after the completion of the first phase.
The pause was part of statutory procedures required to clean up and update the voters’ register ahead of future electoral activities.
Confirmation of the resumption came from the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, when contacted on the development.
The first phase of the Continuous Voter Registration officially ended on December 10, 2025.
During that phase, INEC introduced online pre-registration on August 18, before commencing physical registration at designated centres nationwide on August 25.
INEC explains break, urges eligible Nigerians to register
Data released by the commission showed significant participation by Nigerians during the initial phase.
INEC disclosed that nearly 10 million citizens began the online pre-registration process, while over 2.5 million registrations were fully completed nationwide before the exercise was suspended.
According to the commission, the interval between both phases was used to conduct legally required activities, including the public display of the voters’ register to allow for verification, corrections, and objections by citizens.
“In accordance with Section 19 of the Electoral Act 2022, the display of the register of voters for claims and objections was conducted from December 15 to 21, 2025, at local government area offices where the CVR exercise took place.”
INEC urged eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to take advantage of the resumption to enrol, transfer their voting locations, or update personal details, while noting that registration remains suspended in Anambra State and the Federal Capital Territory due to ongoing electoral activities.
