“I’m driving home to my own house — you’re still in the bush” — US-based soldier tells online critic

A Nigerian serving in the United States Army has sparked debate online after publicly responding to a fellow Nigerian soldier who had repeatedly mocked him on social media.

The exchange, which surfaced on X on Wednesday, quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions from Nigerians at home and abroad.

Online feud spills into public view

The US-based serviceman, whose identity has not been officially disclosed, shared screenshots of past insults allegedly directed at him by the Nigerian soldier.

He said he decided to respond after months of being taunted over his decision to leave Nigeria and enlist abroad.

In his response, he said:

I just finished from work, heading home in my car to my own house. Life is good. The Nigerian you’re protecting is inside my car. Meanwhile, you’re still inside the bush suffering without a car or a house. You sit online every day insulting me, yet you don’t know the struggles people go through before they find better opportunities. I chose a different path and it worked for me.”

Renewed debate on military migration

The incident has reignited conversations about Nigerian professionals, including soldiers, seeking opportunities overseas.

Similar debates emerged in 2023 when reports showed increasing numbers of trained personnel leaving the country for better pay and working conditions.

As of Thursday, neither military authority had issued an official statement, but the conversation continues to trend across Nigerian social media spaces.
