Cultural expectations clash with modern realities

The woman, who shared her situation anonymously, said she has ₦3.5 million saved and is willing to contribute ₦1.5 million to ease the financial burden on her partner.

According to her, the decision comes amid rising costs of traditional marriage rites and pressure from her family, particularly her father, who insists on maintaining the full list.

“I have ₦3.5 million saved and I’m thinking of giving my fiancé ₦1.5 million to pay my own bride price. He loves me, he just can’t afford it right now. My family’s list is too much for where he is financially,” she said.

She explained that while her mother attempted to negotiate a reduction, her father strongly opposed any changes, creating tension within the family.

Debate grows over tradition and financial support

The woman noted that her situation has drawn mixed reactions from those around her, with many warning against breaking cultural norms.

She admitted feeling conflicted between her love for her partner, respect for tradition, and the practical solution her savings provide.

Everyone says it’s taboo for a woman to fund her own bride price. My mother knows, but I can’t tell my father. I feel stuck between doing what’s right culturally and helping the man I love,” she added.

Similar conversations have emerged in recent years as economic realities challenge long-standing marital traditions across Nigeria.
