“I’m a jihadist, I’m an Islamist” — Asari Dokubo boasts

Former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, has stirred debate online after publicly describing himself as an Islamist and a jihadist while speaking about his religious beliefs in a viral video.

In the widely circulated clip, Dokubo explained that the name he now uses reflects his faith and the convictions he has embraced over time.

The former militant leader said the meaning behind the name carries a strong religious identity.

I’m a Jihadist, my name is Mujahed, he who carries out Jihad, that is what it means in Arabic,” Dokubo said in the video.

According to him, the name is not accidental but one he deliberately chose to represent his beliefs and commitment to his religion.

That is the name I adopted,” he stated.

Dokubo speaks on his religious identity

Dokubo further stressed that he practices Islam openly and without fear of criticism. He said he does not apologise for his faith or attempt to hide his beliefs.

Listen to me very well, I’m an Islamist, I’m a Muslim without apologist and fear,” he added.

The remarks have attracted attention online, with many Nigerians sharing different reactions to the video and discussing the meaning of his statements.

A figure known for outspoken views

Dokubo has long been known as one of the most outspoken figures from the Niger Delta region. Over the years, he has frequently commented on political, economic and security issues affecting the region and the country.
