Iheanacho scores late winner on Celtic debut

Kelechi Iheanacho marked his first appearance for Celtic with a decisive late goal as the Scottish Premiership champions secured a 2-1 win over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Sunday.

The Nigerian striker was introduced as a substitute in the 70th minute and made an immediate impact, calmly converting a stoppage-time penalty to seal all three points for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Dream start for Iheanacho

The former Leicester City forward could not hide his delight after making such an impression on his debut.

Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: “I feel really, really good. It’s the last kick of the game, and I got to take it, so I’m really happy.”

Iheanacho’s winner ensured Celtic maintained their strong start to the league campaign, with Rodgers praising his team’s resilience in breaking down a determined Kilmarnock side.

Rodgers’ faith rewarded

Rodgers turned to Iheanacho late in the second half as Celtic searched for a breakthrough.

The manager’s decision paid off when the forward showed composure from the penalty spot in added time, sending the travelling fans into jubilation.

The debut goal is expected to boost Iheanacho’s confidence as he looks to stake a place in the Celtic squad after moving to Glasgow this summer.

His experience in the Premier League and on the international stage with Nigeria is seen as a valuable addition to Rodgers’ attacking options.

Looking ahead

Celtic will now shift their focus to their next league outing against Partick Thistle, before preparing for the start of their Europa League campaign later this month.
