“If you don’t come with Asiwaju’s cap, you’re going back” – Okpebholo to Edo commissioners
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has directed his newly appointed commissioners and board members to wear the “Asiwaju cap”, a symbolic headpiece associated with President Bola Tinubu, during all official meetings.
He made it clear that any official who does not comply would be asked to leave, emphasising the importance of this dress code.
Speaking to the members during the swearing-in ceremony of 19 new commissioners and board members in Benin City on 14 October 2025, he stated:
“I will not forgive any commissioner that is not wearing Tinubu Asiwaju’s cap. If you’re coming to EXCO meeting without the cap, you’re going back.”
He further explained:
“In EXCO, if you are not wearing a suit, and you are wearing a traditional dress, and you come without this Asiwaju cap, you are going back.”
Governor Okpebholo highlighted that the success of these appointments was largely made possible by the support of President Tinubu, stressing the importance of presidential backing for effective governance in Edo State.
He also reminded the appointees that their roles were based on merit and were a call to serve the people, not a reward or patronage:
“Your nominations did not come as a reward or patronage, but as a call to serve the people of Edo State. This administration came into office on the promise of practical governance to touch the lives of our people directly.”
Finally, he urged the commissioners to see their new positions as an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the development of the state, warning that corruption or actions undermining the integrity of his administration would not be tolerated.
