“I’d rather make a deal with Iran, I don’t want to kill people” — US President Trump

United States President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran reached out to his administration to seek talks in a bid to avoid what he described as the “biggest attack since World War II.”
Speaking in a viral video circulating online, Trump said he preferred a diplomatic agreement over military action but maintained that Iran must never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.

Trump says he prefers a deal over military action
Trump said he would rather resolve the dispute through negotiations than resort to force.
“And we’re doing the same thing, by the way. They love me, Islamic Republic of Iran. I’d rather make a deal because I don’t want to kill people.
I do not want to kill people. But at some point, we were set for the biggest attack of any attack, and we’ve hit them very hard for the last few months.”
He claimed that military preparations had reached an advanced stage before Iran allegedly contacted his administration.
“But we were all set for the biggest attack since World War II. And they called me, and they said, ‘Please don’t do it. Let’s talk.'”
Trump accuses media of denying Iran’s alleged request
Trump also accused the media of dismissing his claims that Iran sought negotiations.
“And then they said, ‘We never said that.’ You know what? The fake news knows they did say that. But we are talking. Let’s see what happens. But they respect us. They respect us.”
Reiterates opposition to Iran’s nuclear ambitions
The US president concluded by insisting that previous administrations had failed to act decisively against Iran’s nuclear programme.
“It’s been 47 years, but, really, it’s been 50 years because they’ve been saying 47 for three years. It’s been 50 years.
And no other president has done what he should have done a long time ago because Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. Can’t have it.”
