“I thought Islam was a religion of peace” — Lady narrates how was beating up was for not covering hair during ablution

A young Christian woman has narrated a disturbing incident in Kogi State, claiming she was physically assaulted by three Muslim men for not covering her hair while they were performing ablution.

The incident reportedly occurred near the Anyigba Central Mosque.

Community tensions

Recalling the encounter, she said:

So guys, I didn’t know it was Friday. I went to buy what I’ll use to bake because I have one order. On my way I met them performing ablution. One of them said I should cover my hair. I told him I’m not a Muslim and I wasn’t with my scarf and I didn’t know it was Friday. Before I knew it, all of them started beating me up, saying why will I not cover my hair while they are praying. I don’t even know them. I don’t know any of them. They kept on beating me, slapping me, look at my face.”

Religious coexistence

She expressed shock and disbelief at the attack, questioning the principle of peace often associated with Islam:

“I thought they said Islam is a religion of peace. Three Muslim men beat me and kept slapping me for not covering my hair while they were performing ablution at Anyigba Central Mosque in Kogi State,” she added tearfully.

The incident has raised concerns about religious tolerance and personal safety in the area, especially for individuals unaware of local religious customs.
