“I saw the email the next day” — Man shares frustrating job interview experience in Abuja

A Nigerian man has sparked a conversation about workplace practices after sharing his experience with an Abuja-based organisation during a job application.
In a viral video, the man said he applied for a social media management position advertised as a remote role. However, he claimed the recruitment process quickly became frustrating.

Employer allegedly gave short notice for interview
According to him, the company sent an interview invitation at about 6 p.m. on Thursday for an in-person interview scheduled for 2 p.m. the following day.
He said he only saw the email around 9 a.m. on Friday and informed the company that he could not make it to the office at such short notice.
The employer, he claimed, refused to reschedule the interview, saying 2 p.m. was the general interview time for all applicants.
The man said the company later agreed to conduct the interview virtually.
However, he alleged that he waited for more than 30 minutes before receiving the Zoom link from the human resources representative.
He said he was then left waiting for another 15 minutes because the company had not approved his request to join the meeting.
Multiple responsibilities for one role
The man said the interview raised further concerns after the company explained what the position involved.
According to him, the social media management role included content creation, video editing, graphic design and sales responsibilities.
He said he was also expected to generate sales through the company’s social media platforms.
He described the wide range of responsibilities as a major red flag.
“Tell me why as a social media manager I’m also your content creator and your video editor.”
He also questioned the company’s decision to offer no fixed salary for the position.
According to him, the employer said payment would be based on the sales he generated, with earnings coming through commissions.
Applicant withdraws from recruitment process
The man said the company subsequently asked him to edit and return a video within about 90 minutes.
He said he declined and formally withdrew his application.
“I’m withdrawing my application for this job. Thank you for the time, thank you for the interview, but it’s not for me.”
He argued that the responsibilities discussed during the interview did not match the social media management role he originally applied for.
He also criticised what he described as the company’s performance-based pay structure.
Man questions low salaries in Abuja
Reflecting on the experience, he claimed that similar employment practices are common among some Abuja employers.
He particularly criticised companies that allegedly pay workers around ₦100,000 while requiring them to commute long distances to work every day.
He mentioned places such as Lugbe and Kuje, where he said many low-income workers live.
“What is wrong with Abuja employers? This expectation has to stop.”
He acknowledged that job opportunities can be scarce, but argued that some employers take advantage of desperate job seekers by offering low pay while demanding numerous responsibilities.
The man concluded by asking other workers and job seekers to share their experiences with Abuja employers who allegedly offer low salaries while assigning multiple roles to employees.
