“I regret helping form APC in 2014; Nigeria’s democracy is at risk” — Atiku Abubakar

Former Nigerian Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed regret for his role in forming the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2014, during a press conference in Abuja on February 26, 2026.

Atiku reflects on 2014 political decisions

Speaking to journalists amid microphones from various media outlets, Atiku highlighted concerns over the country’s political and economic trajectory, warning of a potential collapse of democracy.

We did this exercise in 2014. Not so? We came together and formed APC because we felt democracy was faulty in 2014, only for us to end up in the same position we found ourselves in in 2014, worse,” he said, gesturing emphatically.

Atiku pointed to worsening security and economic challenges under the current administration, saying the situation had deteriorated compared to 2014.

Current challenges surpass past struggles

Because 2014, the major challenge was insecurity here and there, the economy, and so on and so forth. Now, it’s even worse than what we fought in 2014,” he added.

He warned of broader consequences for Africa, noting Nigeria’s role as the continent’s largest democracy.

The collapse of democracy in Nigeria is going to lead to the collapse of democracy in Africa because we are the largest democracy in Africa. We must make sure we restore true democracy to our country,” Atiku stated, underscoring the urgency of political reforms and civic engagement to safeguard democratic principles.
