“I paid ₦500,000 for iPhone screen that costs ₦50,000” – Man laments

A man has gone viral after alleging that he was overcharged during a phone repair, claiming he paid ₦500,000 to fix an iPhone 14 Pro Max screen that reportedly costs around ₦50,000 in the open market.
Consumer raises alarm over phone repair pricing
The incident, which he shared online, has reignited conversations around alleged exploitation in Nigeria’s mobile phone repair sector, particularly in major cities like Lagos and Abuja where device repairs are common due to high smartphone usage.
The man said the experience left him frustrated and financially drained, especially after discovering the actual market price of the replacement part.
His complaint has drawn attention to previous consumer rights discussions in 2022 and 2023, when similar allegations of inflated repair charges circulated widely on social media, prompting calls for regulation and transparency in the tech servicing industry.
Calls for regulation and accountability in repair industry
“I fixed my iPhone 14 Pro Max screen for ₦500,000, only to later discover the original screen costs just ₦50,000. This is the extortion VeryDarkMan is fighting against. People are being exploited because they don’t know the real prices of these parts, and technicians are taking advantage,” he said.
He further explained that he felt misled and stressed the need for public awareness on genuine repair costs. According to him, many customers fall victim due to lack of technical knowledge and trust placed in service providers.
“I went in thinking I was paying a fair price, but what I later found out shocked me. This is not just my experience—many people are going through the same thing every day, and it needs to stop,” he added.
The incident has since sparked renewed debate on consumer protection, pricing transparency, and the need for stricter oversight in Nigeria’s informal tech repair market.
