“I joined out of curiosity” — Student seeks advice on how to exit cult group

A young man, who identified himself only as “Obote”, has raised alarm over his involvement in a secret cult group, saying he now fears for his safety and desperately wants to leave.
The anonymous message, shared on social media on Sunday, detailed how curiosity led him into cultism but quickly turned into a dangerous ordeal.
According to him, he has gone into hiding to avoid fellow members, describing the group as violent and unpredictable. His plea has sparked conversations online about the risks of cultism, particularly among young people in Nigeria.
Fear and regret
“I joined cultism out of curiosity and I’m not feeling it. I have been hiding from my fellow cultists and they call me ‘Obote’. Everything about it is dangerous. I want out but I don’t know how. Idon’t feel safe anymore. Please, is there anybody that has been a cultist and successfully got out? I need help before something bad happens,” he said, expressing deep fear and regret over his decision.
Rising concern over cult activities
Cult-related violence has remained a recurring issue in parts of Nigeria, especially in tertiary institutions.
In recent years, authorities have reported clashes between rival groups leading to injuries and deaths.
Security experts warn that exiting such groups can be difficult due to threats and reprisals, urging affected individuals to seek help from trusted authorities and counsellors.
The latest plea highlights the ongoing dangers and the urgent need for awareness and intervention programmes to curb cult recruitment.
