“I gave him light for over a year” — Man calls out neighbour’s entitlement

A man has sparked conversations online after sharing his experience with a neighbour he claims took advantage of his goodwill for over a year without reciprocating.

Act of kindness turns routine

In a post that has since gone viral, the man explained that when he first moved into his residence, he voluntarily connected his neighbour to his generator, allowing him access to electricity whenever he powered it.

According to him, the gesture was made out of goodwill, as the neighbour never requested the arrangement.

Anytime I put on my generator, I’ll call him so he can switch his changeover and use light. He never asked, I just did it out of goodwill,” he said.

Over time, however, the arrangement became an expectation. The man noted that the neighbour began to question him whenever the generator was not running, despite never contributing fuel or offering any form of support.

Frustration over lack of reciprocity

He expressed frustration that despite providing electricity for over a year, the neighbour never contributed “even one litre of fuel.”

The situation worsened during a period when he faced financial constraints and could not afford to run the generator regularly.

According to him, the neighbour’s reaction at the time was dismissive. “This one wey you never on gen for weeks, e really touch you,” the neighbour reportedly said, a comment the man described as insensitive.

Contrast with new flatmate

The situation took a different turn when a new flatmate moved into the building. The man said the new resident began contributing fuel voluntarily, even providing as much as 15 litres within a short period of moving in.

The contrasting behaviours have since sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians highlighting the importance of gratitude and reciprocity, while others warned against unchecked generosity that may lead to entitlement.
