“I don’t steal” — Desmond Elliot reveals his kind of politics

Actor-turned-politician and member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliot, has declared that his style of politics is rooted in honesty, insisting that he does not steal while in public office.
Speaking during an interview, the Surulere Constituency I lawmaker reflected on his time in office, highlighting improvements in electricity supply and advocating for a more structured political system in Nigeria.
Cites improved power supply in Surulere
When asked about his greatest achievement as a lawmaker, Elliot pointed to improvements in electricity in his constituency.
According to him, Surulere was once a difficult place to live due to poor power supply, but the situation has significantly improved over the past decade.
“I’ll say power. If you look at Surulere 10 years ago, it was a horrible place to live in. Today, electricity is one of the best you can find anywhere else,” he said.
The lawmaker also stressed the importance of maintaining an open-door policy and reminded politicians that political offices are temporary.
“We will all die one day. We are not here forever. You are in that particular place for a reason, not because you are better than the next person. Trust me, there are way better people than you,” he stated.
Speaks on party loyalty and Nigerian democracy
Responding to questions about whether he plays politics the right way, Elliot said he often questions the differences between politicians who move from one political camp to another.
He mentioned prominent political figures, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, saying that switching allegiances does not necessarily make a politician different.
The lawmaker argued that Nigeria should consider developing its own democratic model, including a long-term national development plan that allows different regions to take turns in leadership while maintaining policy continuity.
“We have to define our own style of democracy. Let’s have a 30-year plan, for instance,” he said.
Says he sees no immediate alternative to Tinubu
Elliot also admitted that he currently does not see a political figure capable of replacing President Tinubu.
“I’m thinking, okay, who is the next saviour that can remove Asiwaju from what he’s doing presently? I cannot see yet,” he said.
He further noted that politicians often understand the uncertainty of power and recognise that political alliances can change at any moment.
