“I can’t be with a man who doesn’t go to church” — Lady explains dating dealbreakers

A woman has opened up about her recent dating experience, revealing that differences in faith and values played a key role in her decision to end communication with a prospective partner.

Speaking exclusively, she explained that her faith and lifestyle priorities are non-negotiable in choosing a life partner.

Faith as a non-negotiable

There’s this guy that I have been talking to and I asked him a couple of questions. I just knew he’s not my own. He doesn’t believe going to church; he believes God is everywhere. But in my own head, I know that would not be my husband. I can’t be with a man that doesn’t like going to church,” she said.

The lady further explained that discussions around intimacy and personal boundaries were also crucial in her decision, highlighting how open communication can prevent future conflicts in relationships.

Boundaries and personal values

“I asked him what is his take on no intimacy before marriage and he said he can’t. That alone confirmed that we are not compatible. I’ve realised that knowing these things early saves emotional energy and ensures that my values are respected,” she added.

Her experience resonates with many young Nigerians navigating dating in a modern yet faith-conscious society, where personal values, cultural expectations, and religious beliefs often influence relationship decisions.

Similar conversations surfaced widely during the 2021 #RelationshipGoals debates on social media, where faith and lifestyle compatibility were frequently cited as dealbreakers in dating.
