“I brought Mercy Aigbe into Nollywood” — Olaide Olabanji

Nollywood actor Olaide Olabanji has stirred controversy after alleging that he introduced popular actress Mercy Aigbe to the Nigerian film industry, claiming their relationship has since deteriorated.

Olabanji made the remarks during a recent interview, where he expressed disappointment over what he described as a breakdown in communication between both parties.

The actor’s claims have since generated reactions among fans and industry watchers, with many debating the history and dynamics of mentorship within Nollywood.

Claims of mentorship and early support

Speaking on the matter, Olabanji recounted how he allegedly discovered Aigbe in 2004 and gave her an opportunity in acting.

“I brought Mercy Aigbe into the movie industry. I helped her. I saw her in a shop in 2004 and asked her if she could act, she said yes and I put her on. But now she is blocking me. To her, it is as if I should no longer exist. It is painful considering how everything started.”

Reactions and industry context

He further suggested that such fallouts are not uncommon in the entertainment industry, where relationships often change over time.

The development mirrors past disputes within Nollywood, where actors have publicly disagreed over credit for career breakthroughs, highlighting ongoing conversations about recognition and loyalty in the industry.
