“I asked him to come with his plate” – Lady recounts gateman’s complaint over Easter rice gesture

A lady has narrated an incident involving her gateman after she asked him to come and collect Easter rice with his own plate, due to a shortage of takeaway packs.

The incident, which she shared on social media, has sparked discussions on boundaries, perception, and social etiquette within households.

She explained that she routinely distributes food to her gateman during festive periods as part of her yearly tradition.

However, this particular instance took a different turn when the request to bring a plate was interpreted differently by the recipient, leading to a complaint through a neighbour.

Man allegedly feels disrespected by request

According to her, she was later informed that the gateman felt offended by the instruction, claiming it was disrespectful to ask a married man to come with a plate, likening the gesture to begging.

Yesterday, I texted our gateman to come and collect his Easter rice. I told him to come with his plate because I had run out of takeaway packs. He replied, ‘Don’t worry ma’. I was shocked when my neighbour later told me he reported me, saying I disrespected him. It was never my intention to make him feel small. I genuinely thought I was still being kind by sharing what I had,” she said.

The situation has generated mixed reactions online, with some users supporting her intentions while others noted the importance of cultural sensitivity in acts of giving.

Similar misunderstandings have been reported in past years, particularly during festive seasons when acts of charity are sometimes interpreted differently depending on context and perception.
