“I asked for money so nobody would ask me for money” — Man shares family group chat drama

A simple family group chat message has turned into a viral conversation after a man shared what his uncle did to avoid being asked for money.
The story was posted on X, and it quickly caught people’s attention because of how unexpected — and honestly funny — the situation was.
The man explained that his uncle dropped a message in their family group asking everyone to send him some money. Wanting to help, he privately messaged his uncle to ask for his bank details so he could transfer the cash.
What his uncle said next completely changed everything.
“I Don’t Actually Need Money”
Instead of sending his account details, the uncle replied with a confession.
“I don’t actually need money. I asked for money so that nobody in the family would ask me for money.”
According to him, the message wasn’t about financial need. It was a defensive move. By asking first, he believed other relatives would assume he was broke and stop coming to him with their own requests.
The nephew shared the exchange online, and people could not stop reacting.
Social Media Reacts
Many users found the uncle’s strategy hilarious.
DEV wrote, “In every family, you’ll find two kinds of people. Some are clever and play it smart to protect their peace, while others are pure hearts, always ready to help anyone in need.”
Anurag admitted the move was shocking but creative. “That’s honestly wild 😅 I get not wanting people to keep asking for money, but faking a request in the family group is a bold way to handle it. At least he was honest with you privately. Still, that’s a strategy I didn’t see coming.”
Govindan shared a similar experience involving his father. “The same trick my Dad used to play on us. After we graduated and got good jobs, he would ask us for money. I was dumb enough to offer it to him and got scolded. I tried the same thing on my daughter. She uses my credit cards more than I do and she makes $80k.”
Others praised the uncle’s creativity.
Emavis commented, “I’m crying 😭 that’s actually genius. Man said ‘let me ask first so nobody will ask me.’ That’s advanced family group survival tactics right there. Your uncle is playing chess for real.”
Esperanza added, “Your uncle is living in 3026! That is the ultimate defensive play. He really looked at the family group chat and chose ‘chess, not checkers’ to protect his peace (and his pockets). Honestly, a genius move!”
