“I am the value” — Lady sparks debate over women’s role in relationships

A woman has sparked widespread reactions online after declaring that her value in a relationship comes from her existence as a woman and not from material contributions or achievements.
Social media remarks ignite conversations about self-worth
The lady, whose video has circulated widely across social media platforms, made the statement during a conversation about relationships, gender expectations and what women bring into partnerships.
Her comments have since generated mixed reactions, with supporters praising her confidence while critics argued that relationships should be based on mutual contribution and effort.
“When people ask me the value I bring to the table, I always say I’m bringing myself, I’m the value, I’m a woman. Men cannot have a life that is vibrant, colourful and enjoyable without the presence of a woman. Just by virtue of being a woman, I’m enough,” she added.
Debate reflects changing views on relationships
The viral remarks have reopened debates about gender roles, emotional labour and expectations in modern relationships, especially among younger social media users in Nigeria and across Africa.
In recent years, discussions surrounding what men and women contribute to relationships have become increasingly common online.
Similar conversations trended in 2024 after several influencers and relationship commentators argued over whether financial support, emotional care or companionship should define a partner’s value in marriage and dating.
Many users continue to share divided opinions, with some insisting self-worth should not depend on material contribution, while others maintain that healthy relationships require equal effort from both partners.
