“How can I politely tell my mum…?” — Lady says as her mother asks an unexpected question

A Nigerian lady has sparked conversations online after sharing a humorous but relatable experience involving family pressure, marriage talk, and an unexpected emotional ambush during wedding plans.

In a post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, the woman narrated how her mother’s visit to her home took an awkward turn while preparations for her brother’s wedding were underway.

According to her, she had been hosting her mother when her brother and his fiancée also stopped by to discuss wedding arrangements.

Everything seemed normal until the fiancée affectionately called her brother “oko mi,” a Yoruba term meaning “my husband.”

She said she simply smiled at the exchange, without blushing or reacting dramatically, but that small smile turned out to be a costly mistake.

A Simple Smile That Changed Everything

The lady explained that her quiet smile appeared to trigger her mother, who immediately turned to her and asked in Yoruba, “Eyin nko? Kò tíì sí Bọ́dà nà?” which translates to, “What about you? Is there no man yet?”

She described the moment as emotionally overwhelming, saying her smile vanished instantly and she felt deeply embarrassed.

The situation was made worse by the fact that her mother had previously advised her to take her time with relationships, making the sudden question feel confusing and unfair.

Pressure From All Sides

As if the mother’s comment was not enough, the lady added that her brother, now officially the “oko iyawo,” joined in by telling her that her own relationship was “around the corner.”

She jokingly questioned his role in that prophecy, asking if he was the one responsible for providing her with a partner.

Frustrated but clearly amused, she asked fellow social media users how to politely tell her mother and the lovebirds to return to their respective homes, as the constant reminders were becoming too much to bear.
