“Hey… ₦1m don turn ₦100k” — Lady laments declining value of naira

A viral video has sparked widespread debate on social media after a Nigerian lady claimed that ₦1 million no longer carries the financial weight it once did.

In the trending clip, the lady lamented the rising cost of living, arguing that inflation has significantly reduced the value of money, making what used to be considered a large sum feel almost insignificant today.

“One million naira is nothing again”

Speaking in a mix of Pidgin and English, she said, “We don dey see one million naira as normal money. Like one million naira is nothing anymore. One million naira don be like 100k.”

She reflected on how people used to react with excitement at the mention of ₦1 million, but noted that such reactions have faded over time.

You know before if you hear one million naira, hey! one million naira? Now, if you buy something now they go tell you say oh you have to balance off one million naira,” she added.

Personal experience behind the video

The lady explained that her frustration was triggered by a recent experience with a friend who casually asked her for ₦1 million.

She just called me, she no even ask me if I have, she said, ‘jojo you fit send me one million naira, I go send am back tomorrow.’ How do you know if I have it?” she said.

According to her, such requests show how people now assume that ₦1 million is easily accessible to everyone.

So one million naira now don turn 100k wey be say everybody dey get am,” she concluded.

Public reactions trail viral video

The video has since generated mixed reactions, with many Nigerians sharing their personal experiences and opinions.
