“He wanted to Japa” – Man loses ₦1m to ‘Oyinbo woman’ online scam after sharing bank details

A Nigerian man has reportedly been left heartbroken after allegedly losing over ₦1 million to an online scam involving someone he believed was an “Oyinbo woman.”
According to the story shared on X (formerly Twitter), the man had been chatting with the supposed foreign woman for about four months and had already started making plans to relocate abroad.
“My neighbor just got scammed. He’s been chatting with an ‘Oyinbo woman’ for about four months.
At some point, he was already preparing to Japa. International passport ready. Confidence high. He kept telling everyone, ‘She’s coming to Nigeria soon.’”
Things reportedly took a different turn after the woman allegedly requested access to his Nigerian bank account for “urgent transactions” ahead of her supposed arrival in the country.
Without suspecting foul play, the man allegedly handed over his OPay login details, only to wake up the next morning and discover that over ₦1 million had disappeared from his account.
“Without hesitation, he gave her his OPay login details. His thinking was simple: ‘If she lands, she won’t be stranded.’ He woke up the next morning, over ₦1 million gone.
He tried reaching her on their usual platform, but he was blocked. Out of curiosity, he traced the account activity and a Yoruba man’s name appeared. That’s when reality fully landed.”
He was further left devastated, sitting with his international passport and reflecting on the entire incident.
The story has since sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians warning others to be careful when dealing with online relationships and financial requests from strangers.
