“He mocked me for being a dropout, but I turned my needle into dollars” – Lady shares how she outsmarted husband

A Nigerian lady has gone viral after sharing how she quietly built a successful tailoring business despite being constantly mocked by her husband for dropping out of university.

Mocked for Being a Dropout

The young woman, who runs a home-based tailoring business, revealed on Facebook that her husband often looked down on her because of her quiet nature and lack of formal education.

“This man I married looked me in the eye every day and believed I had no sense. Just because I dropped out of university and I’m always quiet, he used to talk to me like I was a house girl. He would say things like, ‘Just stay in your lane,’ or ‘All you know is how to sew and watch Indian films.’ I kept quiet, but in my mind, I said, ‘One day, you go see pepper.’ And that day has finally come,” she said.

Building a Secret Business

For years, she ran her small tailoring business from home, sewing ankara, lace, and ready-to-wear clothes. One day, she posted her work on Instagram, catching the attention of a Nigerian designer based in America.

“She said she loved my finishing, and we started talking and partnered. We’ve been working together since last year. I send her the pieces, she sells them over there, and she pays me in dollars, sometimes actual dollars. My husband didn’t even know. He thought I was just sewing for people in the estate and collecting small change,” she stated.

According to her, she then quietly saved the money, converting it into naira in a separate bank account under her maiden name, and even applied for a new passport and visa through her connection with the designer.

Taking Control of Her Life

Recently, she discovered she was two months pregnant and is unsure if her husband is the father, as they had no children together. She has since moved out to stay with her elder cousin, leaving her husband behind.

“I left him with his pride and TV remote. He called me and asked where I was. I told him I’ve moved. He was shouting on the phone, saying, ‘You? Move to where? With whose money?’ I just laughed.”

Using Brain Over Conflict

The lady explained that she refused to remain in a marriage where her silence was equated with stupidity.

“I didn’t fight. I didn’t shout. I just faced my work and used my brain. Let him sit in that house and think about how the area tailor outsmarted him with needle and thread. My own husband calls me ‘area tailor.'”

“I am 33 years, should I keep this baby? Please advise me,” she added.
