Haaland double fires Manchester City to Champions League win at Porto

Erling Haaland continued his remarkable Champions League scoring run with a brace as Manchester City cruised to victory over Porto in their opening European fixture.

The Norway striker followed up his winning goal against Coventry at the weekend by scoring twice in Portugal, taking his Champions League tally for City to 36 goals in just 40 appearances.

Haaland’s goals ensured City made a confident start to another Champions League campaign, with Enzo Maresca’s side controlling much of the contest and rarely looking troubled by their hosts.

Haaland delivers again for City

Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa produced several outstanding saves to keep the score level during the opening stages.

Costa denied Haaland twice with impressive reflex stops and also kept out attempts from Antoine Semenyo and Phil Foden as City dominated possession and created the clearer opportunities.

The breakthrough eventually arrived when Haaland rose to head City into the lead, before the striker returned later in the game to roll another finish past Costa and put the result beyond doubt.

The performance continued Haaland’s strong start to the season.

Porto struggle to threaten City

Porto entered the match in excellent domestic form, having won all five of their league games this season, but they found the European challenge considerably tougher.

The Portuguese side failed to register a shot during the first half and struggled to create meaningful openings against a disciplined City defence.

Alan Varela came close after Haaland’s opener with a curling effort that drifted narrowly wide, while William Gomes also missed the target.

Those chances proved insufficient, however, as Porto finished the match without forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into a save.
