Graduate laments financial struggles, questions pressure to join NYSC

A Nigerian graduate has expressed frustration over the financial burden associated with participating in the National Youth Service Corps.

In an emotional video shared on social media, the young woman explained that she is under pressure from her parents to proceed with the mandatory national service despite struggling to afford the necessary registration and living expenses.

Lady laments cost of registration

She revealed that the online registration alone costs about ₦15,000 and questioned how she was expected to raise the money without support. According to her, she had already faced severe hardship during her university years, including surviving on minimal food for days while trying to pay for training and practical work.

The graduate also expressed frustration that her parents were asking about the skills she had learned and suggesting she return to the village after graduation.

She argued that she worked hard to acquire those skills and did so largely without financial help from her family.

She further pointed out that her elder sister had already completed the national service program but had not secured employment afterward, which made her skeptical about the benefits of the process.

Her words …

“Mommy, it’s not by force to go for service. It’s not by force. It’s not by force. If you know you cannot pay for NYC registration, don’t force me to go for service.

I know what I am going through. I called my people to tell me about net registration. And the first thing that is coming out from dad’s mouth is, what about the work you are doing? As in, so I want to ask, what are the responsibilities of a parent? What? I want to know, what is your responsibilities? As I am staying, I still want to pay for it.

They ask you for money. Even when I was in the other apartment, before I moved here, because there was no water, the environment was very, very dirty. And I was not seeing work because of the environment. and come back to the village so after graduating i should come back to the village to do what?

So i should just sweep the skills i learned i should sweep it under the mud because you want me to come back. Back my 300 level days, I know how I struggled to pay for my training fee. I know how I drank Garri for straight one week so that I can do my practical work.

At 2026, they are telling me, what about the work you learnt? What about the work? Work that you do not contribute a dime. I was going to school and I was going for training. Isn’t it days when I will cry my eyes out because I cannot afford, I cannot afford to pay monomal.

Because I lent nails. I should come back home. ah mom oh, registration has started and net registration is 15,000 and all what you could say is am i the first person to go for service? Do you think service is free? do you think service is free i want to pay for net registration which is 15 000 where should i get this money from If I’m going for service.

I’ll need some necessities as a girl child. You don’t want to do anything. I should just carry my load. Go for service. Believe in there is work after service. Mom, which work? My sister has graduated and gone for service before me. Where is the work government gave her? Where is the work? So please, I think this video will get to you. I don’t want to go. I don’t want to. Do you know what I am going through?”
