“Go and get yourself a gun” — Man’s remarks on insecurity spark outrage

A man has triggered widespread reactions online after urging citizens to arm themselves amid rising insecurity across parts of the country.
In a viral video circulating on social media, the man criticised government officials over what he described as a failure to adequately protect lives, citing recent attacks in Plateau State and other affected regions.
The remarks come at a time when concerns over killings, displacement, and rural insecurity have continued to dominate public discourse, with many Nigerians calling for stronger security interventions.
Call for self-defence raises concerns
In his statement, the man said: “Nigerians, go and get yourself a gun. Forget any project or investment you want to go and make at the moment, just go and get yourselves a very big gun. As you can see, your president is no longer interested in securing your lives. He’s more interested in getting a second term in 2027. The Governor of Plateau State came to the scene in an armoured vehicle and refused to come down. What did he say? We will bury the dead. Nothing was said about justice or apprehending the perpetrators.”
Debate over security and governance
He further criticised national leadership and security agencies, claiming citizens are increasingly left to fend for themselves.
“Your Chief of Army Staff is more interested in quoting the prodigal son than apprehending the culprits. Many villages are empty, and the press is not reporting most of these things. We are on our own,” he said.
His comments echo past public frustrations, including reactions following previous mass killings in northern Nigeria, where citizens similarly questioned government response and accountability.
