Frank Lampard praises Onyeka after first Coventry goal

Frank Onyeka has earned strong praise from Frank Lampard after opening his account for Coventry City in their 3-2 win over Derby County.

The Nigerian midfielder, on loan from Brentford, delivered a standout performance, scoring the opener early in the contest and completing the full 90 minutes in a high-intensity Championship clash.

Lampard highlights Onyeka’s all-round quality

Speaking after the game, Lampard made it clear the goal was a reflection of Onyeka’s consistent impact since arriving at the club.

“The work that he does for the goal is exactly what he has been doing for us and it’s what we brought him in to do, sort of breaking up play. But there’s more to his game,” Lampard said.

“The physical part of his game is one thing, and breaking it up. But he has got that also (shooting). All round, he’s a quality player and an amazing lad… he just comes in and works.”

Lampard also emphasised the midfielder’s humility and professionalism, noting how quickly he has integrated into the squad.

“He’s such a lovely bloke and I’m delighted for him. This place adores him already,” he added.

Off-pitch sacrifice and growing influence

Beyond his on-field contributions, Onyeka’s commitment has also stood out internally. Lampard revealed the midfielder has made personal sacrifices, including time away from family shortly after welcoming a newborn.

“When someone comes in from the Premier League and he’s just so diligent… he had a baby when he first came in, he’s staying in hotels, not seen his family… and he’s like ‘No, no, I need to be here.’”

Since his arrival, Coventry have won eight of the nine matches Onyeka has featured in, underlining his growing influence in midfield.

Promotion push on track

The victory moves Coventry 11 points clear at the top of the Championship, putting them in a commanding position to secure promotion to the Premier League.

Attention now shifts to their next fixture against Hull City, where Onyeka will look to maintain form as the club edges closer to a return to the top flight.
