Former Wolves player dies in car accident at 21

Macclesfield FC have confirmed the death of forward Ethan McLeod following a car accident on the M1 motorway on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old was travelling back from the club’s National League North fixture against Bedford Town, where he featured as a substitute, when the incident occurred at around 22:40 local time near Northampton. His white Mercedes reportedly collided with a barrier.

Club and football world react

Macclesfield described McLeod as an “incredibly talented” player and a “well-respected member” of the squad, admitting the news has left the club devastated.

“News of Ethan’s passing has devastated our entire club and no words can convey the immense sense of sadness and loss that we feel now,” the club said in a statement.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, where McLeod began his career and where his younger brother Conor currently plays for the U21 side, also expressed their heartbreak and confirmed support will be provided to the family.

Career path and recent impact

McLeod joined Wolves’ academy at the age of seven and later featured for their U21 side in the EFL Trophy, though he never made a senior appearance.

The Birmingham-born forward had spells with Alvechurch, Rushall Olympic and Stourbridge before joining Macclesfield in July following a successful trial.

He made five appearances for the Silkmen, scoring twice, with his most recent goal coming in a 1-1 draw against King’s Lynn Town on 10 December.

Tributes and upcoming fixtures

Macclesfield praised McLeod’s “lust for life”, “unwavering work ethic” and “unique smile”, offering condolences to his family and friends.

A decision is yet to be made on whether Saturday’s league fixture at Alfreton Town will go ahead.

Meanwhile, a minute’s silence will be observed before Wolves’ Premier League match against Brentford on Saturday.

Baller League side VZN FC, where McLeod competed in season one, also confirmed they were “devastated” by the news.
