FIFA clears Okonkwo to play for Super Eagles

FIFA has confirmed that Arthur Okonkwo is now eligible to represent Nigeria, handing Eric Chelle an additional option in between the sticks.
The goalkeeper, who previously represented England at youth level, had faced delays regarding his international switch.
However, his nationality change has now been formally approved and updated, clearing him to feature for the Super Eagles in all competitions.
Competition increases in goal
Okonkwo’s availability intensifies competition within Nigeria’s goalkeeping unit, where Stanley Nwabali, Maduka Okoye, and Francis Uzoho have been the primary options.

Nwabali has held the first-choice position in recent matches, while Okoye and Uzoho continue to provide depth. The addition of Okonkwo introduces another contender with a strong profile, increasing selection pressure ahead of key internationals.
Eligibility shift opens new pathway
Born in England to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo progressed through England’s youth system but did not earn a senior call-up.
That opened the door for a switch to Nigeria, though initial expectations of a call-up during the last international window were delayed due to pending FIFA approval.
With the process now complete, the pathway is clear for his integration into the national team setup.
Focus turns to upcoming fixtures
Nigeria are scheduled to face Portugal and Poland in June, fixtures that could provide an opportunity for Okonkwo to make his debut.
