Fenerbahce sack Jose Mourinho after Champions League exit

Fenerbahce have sacked head coach Jose Mourinho following the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

The Turkish side confirmed the decision on Monday after their 1-0 aggregate defeat to Benfica in the play-off round, which ended hopes of reaching Europe’s elite competition.

Mourinho, who was appointed earlier this year with the task of restoring Fenerbahce’s continental credentials, oversaw a turbulent qualifying campaign that ended in disappointment.

The club’s board moved quickly to part ways with the Portuguese manager, citing the need for new direction.

The setback marks another blow to Mourinho’s recent career, with his latest tenure cut short after just months in charge.

Fenerbahce are expected to announce an interim replacement soon, as they turn their focus back to domestic competition and the Europa League.
