He noted that many voters do not have access to the knowledge needed to make decisions based on each individual’s attitude, and hence occasionally vote for candidates based on their party affiliation.

He criticised floppers with this in mind, claiming that the effect “cannot be anything but negative”. Gbajabiamila served as Minority Leader of the House of Representatives in the 7th National Assembly.

Gbajabiamila led the House of Representatives ad hoc committee that investigated claims made by the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) over the 140.9 billion naira (approximately $1 billion) debt owing by ‘Zenon Petroleum & Gas Limited’ and ‘Forte Oil Plc’.

Another lawmaker, Bimbo Daramola, called for an investigation into the reported payment and proposed that the House form a panel to verify AMCON’s claims that the two Femi Otedola-owned companies had paid back the money that the Nigerian government had paid for petroleum products that were allegedly not delivered in accordance with the terms of the government’s fuel subsidy scheme.

Bimbo Daramola suspected that the payment, if genuine, was “shrouded in secrecy.” Gbajabiamila was elected speaker of the 9th National Assembly, House of Representatives with 283 votes, while Mohammed Umar Bago finished second with 78.

In the House, Gbajabiamila expressed a strong interest for issues affecting his people and Nigeria as a whole. He developed a reputation as a clever lawmaker.

After 20 years in the House of Representatives, he resigned on June 14, 2023, to become President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff.
