“Fela has been dead 27 years, let him be”- Yeni Kuti weighs in on feud between Seun Kuti and Wizkid

Yeni Kuti, daughter of the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has weighed in on the ongoing feud between Wizkid and her brother, Seun Kuti, urging calm and unity.

The dispute began after members of Wizkid’s fan base, popularly known as Wizkid FC, repeatedly referred to the Grammy-winning singer as a “modern-day Fela Kuti.”

The comparison did not sit well with Seun Kuti, who publicly slammed Wizkid over it, prompting a response from the singer and sparking a heated online exchange.

Reacting to the situation, Yeni Kuti recalled her long-standing relationship with Wizkid and highlighted his humble beginnings in the music industry.

“Wizkid is my padi. When two giants fight, the grass suffers. I refuse to enter this discussion because of some of the insults they are hurling. I love Wizkid a lot, and we have really come a long way together.

“I remember when he started, he was a backup singer at the shrine during Felabration. There is no way I can’t like him. I like him,” she added.

Yeni Kuti also addressed how the feud has dragged her father’s legacy into the controversy. She stressed that Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s name remains respected decades after his death.

According to her, the conflict should not overshadow the unity and lessons music is meant to bring, as she urged everyone involved to settle their differences peacefully.

“I wish it had been stopped early, but now let us mend fences. We are one people. Fela has been dead for 27 years, and for people to still be mentioning his name, it means he is great.”

Yeni Kuti’s remarks have resonated with many Nigerians online, with fans praising her for calling for peace and reminding the public of Fela Kuti’s enduring legacy.
