Federal High Court in panic as detained NDLEA suspect dies during court proceedings

A 52-year-old woman, identified as Titilayo Akindele, has died in Benin City, Edo State, after collapsing during court proceedings following her arrest by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) over alleged drug offences.

Akindele was reportedly arrested for selling “loud,” a potent variant of cannabis, and had been standing trial when the incident occurred.

Despite being granted bail by the court, she was said to have remained in NDLEA custody, raising concerns about compliance with judicial orders and the treatment of suspects in detention.

Health complaints reportedly ignored

According to accounts surrounding the case, the deceased had repeatedly complained of ill health both in court and to the agency, pleading to be taken to a medical facility for treatment.

It was also alleged that her family offered financial support to facilitate her care, but these appeals were not acted upon.

Courtroom tragedy raises questions

The incident reportedly took a tragic turn when she collapsed during a court sitting and was confirmed dead shortly after.

The development has sparked renewed debate about detainee welfare, access to healthcare, and adherence to bail conditions by law enforcement agencies.

Back in 2023, similar concerns were raised in Nigeria following reports of suspects allegedly denied adequate medical attention while in custody, prompting calls for reforms in detention practices and stronger oversight of security agencies.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
